Our Curriculum

At Watery Lane Preschool, our curriculum is at the heart of everything we do. It encompasses every experience, interaction, and opportunity that supports your child's learning, development, and wellbeing throughout their time with us. Learning doesn't just happen during planned activities, it takes place through play, daily routines, meaningful conversations, exploring the environment, and the relationships children build with both adults and their peers.

Our curriculum is carefully designed in line with the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) and is tailored to meet the unique needs, interests, and stages of development of every child. We recognise that children learn best when they feel safe, valued, and engaged, so we create an environment where they are encouraged to explore, investigate, ask questions, and develop their own ideas.

We provide a balance of child-initiated play and thoughtfully planned adult-led experiences, ensuring children have the freedom to follow their interests while also being gently challenged to develop new skills and knowledge. Our experienced practitioners observe children's learning closely, using these observations to plan exciting and meaningful opportunities that build on what children already know and can do.

Our rich learning environment promotes all areas of development, including communication and language, physical development, personal, social and emotional development, early literacy and mathematics, understanding of the world, and expressive arts and design. We believe that every moment is a learning opportunity and that children develop best through hands-on experiences, exploration, creativity, and positive relationships.

I will become a Curious Creator who will be able to follow a recipe to cook/bake and prepare a healthy snack.

I will be able to independently create a model from materials, talk about changing states of matter, how I have safely used the resources, how I did it and how l overcame set backs.

Independent Individual

I will become an Independent Individual who will be able to follow golden rules in preschool, set simple goals and persevere to achieve them. I will be able to independently select resources and manage my own needs such as toileting and hygiene. I will know how to keep my self fit and healthy

Motivated Mover

I will become a Motivated Mover who can use strength, balance and co-ordination to run, jump, hop, skip and dance confidently and safely. I will be able to kick and catch a ball, climb and negotiate large apparatus with confidence.

'Maths Magician

I will become a Maths Magician who has have a deep breadth and understanding of numbers 1-5. I will be able to recognise patterns in numbers, compare quantities, recall number bonds to 5 and solve mathematical problems. I will understand the difference between 2d & 3d shapes, be able to name and recognise them. I will recognise time, now, later,

yesterday and tomorrow.

Forever Friend

I will learn how to become a Forever Friend who can be kind, caring, helpful and show empathy and respect to others. I will be able to work and play co-operatively whilst considering others ideas and feelings. I will show determination, resilience and always seek to challenge myself.

Literacy Legend

I will become a Literacy Legend who will develop a love of books and stories, use new vocabulary to talk about what has been read to me. I will be able to recognise initial sounds, identify some letters and recognise my name. I will be able to contribute to making up stories with my peers and begin to write letters that are formed correctly.

I will learn to be a Community Champion who can help look after their community, care for the environment id living things.

I will be able to tell what is special about my family and my town I live in and have an awareness of other peoples cultures and beliefs.

I will become a Masterful Musician who will be able to select my own instrument and copy a rhythm. I will be able to play soft and loud sounds, alternating between the two and play alongside other musicians as a group.

I will become a Courageous Communicator who will ask relevant questions, consider answers and make comments. I will be able to hold a conversation with my friends and adults. Express my ideas and feelings with confidence and rapidly expand my vocabulary.

Tactical Tool User

 I will become a Tactical Tool User' and be able to hold a pencil effectively with good control. I will be able to use a range of tools with confidence such as scissors, cutlery, paintbrushes, tweezers, hammers, screwdrivers and saw. I will be able to tell you why l am using the tool selected, how it works and how to keep safe.

'Worldly Wizard'

 I will be a Worldly Wizard' developing a love and appreciation for outdoors, navigating varying terrains. I will tell you about seasons, how our world changes and how to keep safe. I will talk about different landscapes within our area such as forests, beaches and towns. I will be able to read and draw maps and have an awareness of ICT and how it works.
